About Me

This is a blog about wine and all the things that benefit from it. Food. Friendships. Family. The economy. Not necessarily in that order.

I grew up in Nebraska, in a large and noisy household of eight children headed by two supremely patient and tolerant adults. My parents loved good beef, and favored cheap red wine. The combination made for many leisurely dinners and fueled lively family discussions about politics, and even livelier games of wit. At our house, Sunday night dinners often lingered into early Monday morning.
When I moved to Washington 20 years ago, I found myself, a little skeptically, I’ll admit, in the heart of wine country. I was skeptical because Washington wines were only beginning to earn respect. I knew nothing about growing grapes or making wine, so I didn’t recognize the true potential of the nascent Washington wine industry. But I did know a good time when I saw it, and with wine tasting all around me, a new hobby was born.
I also recognized a good opportunity when I saw it. Along with wine tasting, a new business was born as well – as a freelance writer, I’d found a gold mine of fascinating people and interesting products to cover. Wines have led me to write stories about grapes, agriculture and business and economic development – all good things, but none so interesting as wine and the people who make it, sell it and drink it. I know you’ll meet some interesting people here. And I hope you’ll also find some fascinating wines.
